Tavernetta to Reopen After Fire, but What Have the Employees Been Doing?

Tavernetta — the much-anticipated Denver debut from Frasca Food & Wine's Bobby Stuckey, Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson, Peter Hoglund and partner Mark Falcone — was barely a week into service when tragedy struck: a fire broke out during dinner service on September 21, eventually requiring an evacuation — and forcing the restaurant to shutter. A...

Aurora’s Ethiopian Community May Be the Key to Mike Coffman’s Success

In today's highly partisan political landscape, crossover votes are becoming less and less common. But one Colorado congressman has successfully navigated political polarization and redistricting to successive victories, despite representing a district that typically favors a party different from his own at the presidential level.

Two 13-Year-Olds Allegedly Had “Kill List” for Their Middle School

News that two thirteen-year-olds who allegedly compiled a "kill list" related to their middle school have been arrested in Colorado Springs hardly qualifies as shocking at this point. How Watching East High Cheerleader Be Tortured Became a National Pastime

A video of thirteen-year-old Denver East High School cheerleader Ally Wakefield being forced into the splits position while crying out in agony has gone viral on a cat-playing-piano, double-rainbow, Numa-Numa-guy level. The story is still developing at this writing, and it presents something of a dilemma for our Schmuck of the Week department, since choosing only one schmuck in this situation is virtually impossible. But right now, the likeliest nominees are cheer coaches Ozell Williams and Mariah Cladis, two East High administrators and a Denver Public Schools official who've been put on leave amid the ongoing investigation, and all of us, for our fascination with images that could well violate the Geneva Conventions rules against torture.

Inside the Traffic Jam Caused by the Worst Accident in the Worst Place

On Sunday, July 30, my wife Deb and I missed by approximately five minutes being involved in a horrific traffic accident on Interstate 70 near the 40 East exit that killed two people and injured six. As such, we were in the first wave of travelers stuck in a mammoth traffic jam resulting from eastbound I-70's closure, which lasted just over seven hours. The incident took place at what may be the worst possible place for such an incident in the Denver area, and at the worst possible time, when thousands of people were returning to the city from a summer weekend in the mountains.
