Graham Reynolds (pictured) doesn’t know from niches. The composer, pianist, drummer and leader of the Golden Arm Trio works in a montage of sound that draws its influences from everywhere: garage rock, improvisational noise, free jazz, symphonic music, hip-hop beats and the pure, thin air.
His most notable project of late was the tour-de-force soundtrack for Richard Linklater’s woozy, animation-overlaid Philip Dick sci-fi drug fantasy A Scanner Darkly, an intensive venture, now available on CD, more than a year in the making.
Riding high on the success of the Scanner score, Reynolds and band have taken to the road, bringing their exceptional sounds to Denver on Saturday, November 18, for a pair of shows. Starting at 1 p.m., Yazoo will provide the finger-lickin’ barbecue for a marathon at the Larimer Lounge, 2721 Larimer Street, with performances by the Inactivists, New Ancient Astronauts, Pee Pee and Action Friend, before the trio takes the stage at 5 p.m. Admission for the entire afternoon is $5; call 303-291-1007.
