Denver’s own Pat Schroeder helped pave the way for Hillary Clinton and future female presidential candidates with an exploratory campaign in advance of the 1988 presidential election. In announcing her subsequent decision not to run, Schroeder broke down in tears — a performance widely ridiculed in Washington, as she’s acknowledged since then. When Clinton welled up during the 2008 race, however, most observers cheered her for showing emotion.
