There’s something for everyone in Seattle’s Kinski — assuming everyone likes freaked-out, molar-cracking instrumental guitar rock. Lucy Atkinson, Matthew Reid-Schwartz, Barrett Wilke and Chris Martin combine elements of space rock, kraut rock, avant rock, psych rock and prog rock — along with good, old-fashioned hard rock — into intricate compositions too structured to be called jams, but too sprawling to be called tight. Kinski uses tension and release, quiet and loud, silence and violence to keep its songs — some flirting with the ten-minute mark — compelling and crushing. Fans of Sonic Youth and Sonic Boom, Black Sabbath and Black Keys will dig the quartet’s multi-pronged attack. A contender for world’s loudest band, this four-piece puts the pedals to the metal with cool calculation and reckless abandon.
