Fade’s Audio Racketeering has some unique personality traits, taking cues from both Dirty South pimpology and modern dance pop — a combination that produces some engaging results and others that are poorly conceived, badly mixed and just boring. As a rapper, Fade is serviceable — which is to say, he can put together words that rhyme, but there’s not much to sink your teeth into. And when he does find an interesting voice, it’s mostly masked by overwhelming effects, which are caked on here like a Toddlers & Tiaras makeup job. Audio Racketeering succeeds most when it surrenders completely to its pop inclinations, as in “HypeMan,” which is totally devoid of substance but nonetheless danceable. The project would work better as an EP pared down with the Jaws of Life than as the inconsistent full-length it is.
