Boonie Mayfield has done it again! On Black Kool-Aid, he’s crafted a beat tape that’s as perfect as a cloudless sky on a sunny day. Hyperbole? Hardly. Black Kool-Aid is a righteous effort from the rapping producer. Opening up with the sound of ice cubes clinking in a glass and the sound of a liquid (presumably Kool-Aid) being poured, the album conveys a sense of cool right from the start. The first full track, “Simon Says,” contains a sizzling bass line and twinkling pianos worthy of sturdy headphones and high volume. One of the best tracks, “Pass the Offering,” features Play Cousin, a duo comprising the producer and Jordan Craft. Boonie spits rhymes fit for the beats made by his own hand, emphasizing, “It’s my beats that got the muscle tone.” An intergalactic journey of haunting organs, stuttered percussion and swaying keys, Black Kool-Aid is made just right.
