Beadebe’s Small Ax (a throw to the Bob Marley track of the same name) is a reggae-influenced, rap-inspired cacophony of beats, rhythms and thoughtful lyrics. Beadebe’s staccato flow oscillates perfectly between island-inflected tones and traditional hip-hop rhymes, giving the thirteen-track project an easy and listenable quality. With production entirely from Yonnas Abraham, the groove on joints like “Good People” and “Legalize it” is unmatched. Beadebe offers a rap take on many themes present in today’s reggae — peace, love, soul and the destruction of injustice — and he does it well, albeit with minor inconsistencies. The closing track, “Make Sacrifice,” is the MC’s strongest performance here and highlights his reflective lyrics. Vibe, seen.
