Lawrence, Kansas, is an unlikely little pocket of American Bohemia tucked into the heart of the Midwest. So it should come as no surprise that it has its own nascent music scene, which includes the likes of Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk. Oftentimes the most visible bands from out-of-the-way places are born as punk bands. Maybe the members of Baby Birds started out that way, but what they are now is a beautifully moody lo-fi pop group. Maybe its members listened to a good deal of psych folk, XTC and that weird period of Pink Floyd between Syd Barrett’s departure and Dark Side of the Moon. Either way, this group has mastered the art of creating a breathtakingly gorgeous grandeur of trailing, echoing sounds at the periphery of well-crafted songs.
