We’ve been singing the accolades of the cocktail program at Colt & Gray, 1553 Platte Street, since the place opened, and for good reason: It’s one of the leaders in bar craft in Denver. But beyond the inventive mixology, the team works hard to offer the same level of quality on its beer and wine lists, filling the taps, coolers and cellar with rare offerings from around the globe.
As such, the restaurant gets access to some pretty interesting kegs.
Today, for instance, the bar will tap a keg of Russian River Supplication, an American wild ale. The beer is a brown ale that the brewery ages in pinot noir barrels with wild yeasts and sour cherries, which gives the beer a tart, fruity characteristic. It’s medium-bodied, complex and smooth–and perfect for today’s weather, which alludes to the onset of fall. As a bonus, the beer makes a perfect pairing for trotters, charcuterie and gougeres, all of which, thankfully, grace Colt & Gray’s menu.
Russian River only releases a few kegs of Supplication each year, so very few bars and restaurants in the area have an opportunity to pour it. Colt & Gray will tap the ale at 4:30 p.m., just in time for happy hour, and it will go fast.
