Ask the Critic: Father’s Day Foodies

Last week, Ask the Critic was all about me and my mom, and where I should take her while she was in town now that I have run through all of Denver’s standard family-in-town destinations. In the end, we ended up hitting several places: D bar for starters, and then a few more (filled with both horrors and delights) that will be written about over the next week or so.

This week, I have a similar question, posed by another over-served gastronaut, dealing with the opposite end of the familial spectrum.  With Father’s Day fast approaching (it’s Sunday, June 21), where can you take a dad already accustomed to the breweries and steakeries of our fair city?

For me, the answer is simple: Were my father  in town over Dad’s Day, I would absolutely bundle the old man into the car, drive him down to Sedalia and spend the day with him, sucking down double cheeseburgers and Coronas at Bud’s Bar. It’s one of the best cheeseburgers in the nation, after all.  Not the best, but damn close.

Other possibilities? The Columbine Steakhouse for the kind of steak Dad used to make, as I discovered when I recently reviewed the place), or Cherry Crest Seafood for a good, old-fashioned lobster dinner that wouldn’t bankrupt me. The Berkshire, because I’m not sure that anything would make the man happier than an entire dinner composed of nothing but pork products and flights of bacon. Maybe China Jade, because god knows he bought me enough Chinese food growing up — feeding the jones in his boy long before anyone had any idea that someday I’d be making a living mining all those long-gone meals for memories of wontons past.
