Theater can provoke a lot of reactions, but apprehensive nail-biting is not typically one of them. “You rarely see thrillers on stage that have a lot of suspense,” observes Meridith Friedman, the Curious Theatre Company’s playwright-in-residence for the company’s world premiere of Robert Lewis Vaughan’s Astronomical Sunset.

Not so, she says, with Astronomical Sunset, the story of a relationship torn asunder by a social-media scandal. The two people victimized by the scandal move to a small town to recover and try to piece their lives back together. There, they meet a couple of “interesting characters” — who may not be what they seem.

“It’s kind of supernatural,” says Friedman. “I would compare it to a really good episode of the Twilight Zone or the X-Files.”

The show opens tonight at 8 p.m. at Curious, 1080 Acoma Street, and is followed by a reception with the cast and director that includes food and drinks. The play continues its run through December 4. For show times, more information or to purchase tickets, $18 to $42, call 303-623-0524 or visit www.curioustheatre.org.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Nov. 6. Continues through Dec. 4, 2010
