Listening to stories is something many people have been doing ever since they were kids and Eloise and Goodnight Moon got top billing.

Stories on Stage updated the concept for adults, however, bringing in professional actors each year to do the readings. It will kick off its twelfth season around the theme M Is for Mayhem. “Basically it’s theater of the mind, somewhat akin to books on tape,” says program director Abbe Stutsman. “You hear a story and you become part of the story.”

Tonight’s show brings together four offbeat crime tales, including Margaret Atwood’s “Stone Mattress,” which follows a murderous widow on vacation, and “Crazy Like a Fox,” a revenge tale penned by Kerry Workman of the Lighthouse Writers Workshop. L.A. Law stars Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker will be in town to read, along with local actress, director and Westword MasterMind Jessica Robblee. As always, complimentary milk and homemade cookies will be available after the show.

M Is for Mayhem runs today at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Su Teatro, 721 Santa Fe Drive. Stories on Stage continues monthly with different themes through May. For tickets, $25 general admission and $15 for students, call 303-494-0523 or visit www.storiesonstage.org.
