Although early April weather conditions can be iffy, it’s worth braving any showers to hit First Friday. There’s a lot happening this month, but here are a few of the don’t-miss highlights:
In the RiNo art district, eight artists working in eight diverse media are banding together at Orange Cat Studios, 2625 Larimer Street, for The Art Show, offering everything from a bronze body by J. Weeber to a video and sound room designed by local multimedia mover Johnny Morehouse. Tonight’s opening reception, which begins at 6 p.m., also features a table of affordable art, including stained-glass magnets, postcards and, Morehouse says, “maybe cupcakes. The Artdistrict on Santa Fe, always lively on First Fridays, plays host to the opening reception for Santos y Cruces: Traditional and Contemporary Expressions, a group display of Hispanic devotional iconography at the Chicano Humanities & Arts Council, 772 Santa Fe Drive. The reception goes from 5 to 10 p.m., and there will be a silent auction of artist-designed crosses. The show continues through April 22; for information, call 303-571-0440 or go to www.chacweb.org.
A few blocks down the street is the monthly Art-O-Mart market for emerging artists. Tonight’s festivities at the Capsule Event Center, 560 Santa Fe, include live mural painting by Markham Maes and music by the Perry Weissman 3 from 6 to 10 p.m.; the market continues tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 303-623-3460.
