“This race is much more than just running around and splashing through some mud,” says Brad Scudder, the man behind the Rugged Maniac 5K, slinging mud at a few adventure races put on by competitors. “We have large, involved, maniac obstacles like the Suicide Slide, which takes you into the Drowned Rat, the Prometheus Leap fire obstacle, and a mean Tire Gauntlet.”

Today the Rugged Maniac 5K will take over Thunder Valley Motocross Park, 701 South Rooney Road in Lakewood, a venue that’s well equipped for all manner of muddy mania. Adventure races have become hugely popular in this state, with recent events like the Warrior Dash and the Tough Mudder Mud Run selling out, so Scudder’s coming prepared: He’ll be sending waves of maniacs into battle every thirty minutes starting at 9 a.m. and going until 4 p.m. He thinks he can accommodate thousands of competitors — and he just might, since there are a lot of rugged maniacs up for a challenge here in Colorado. “You’ll finish this race exhausted and exhilarated,” he notes, “and then you’ll get to party with thousands of like-minded maniacs at our music festival, which features performances by TJ Kong and the Atomic Bombs and Denver band James and the Devil.”

Registration is $68 in advance at www.ruggedmaniac.com or $88 on the day of the event; reserve a wave or show up any time during the day and race in the next available wave. Spectator tickets, which include entry to the music festival, are $10 (children under thirteen admitted free).
