Burlesque queen and pinup model Bettina May has always been into the vintage pinup look. “I do a really authentic 1940s-1950s style at shows, and I always got asked how I get that look,” she says. But since “you can’t really describe that” at a show, May launched Bettina May’s Pin-Up Class in 2006 and taught it in her home town of Victoria, British Columbia.
The classes were so successful that May started taking them with her whenever she traveled or went on tour. Attendees are given hair and makeup styling/advice and the opportunity to do a photo shoot.
“I have been really surprised at how life-changing an experience it can be for women,” May notes. “I get a lot of everyday gals who aren’t necessarily interested in vintage culture, but there’s something about pinup style. It’s classic and elegant but still sexy — but sexy in a way you can show your parents. It’s a very safe glamour for women, and it’s also a very inclusive kind of beauty.”
May won’t be performing in Denver this trip, but you can take her class at Beauty Bar, 608 East 13th Avenue, today at 11 a.m. Admission is $50 for stylists seeking tips, and $200 for the full hair-makeup-photo package. Call 720-542-8024 or visit bettina.ca.
