If you’re used to grabbing a quick lunch on the go, today is the day for a change. Denver’s first Pop Up Picnic — sponsored by Grow Local Colorado, Slow Food Denver and Healthy Realities – is inviting everyone to have a picnic anywhere in town between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. “It kind of spun off the whole idea of a flash mob, and I thought, ‘What if we did that with picnics?’” says Healthy Realities’ Megan Gilroy. “So it’s picnics placed all throughout Denver in the most spontaneous, random places for no other reason than to draw attention and provoke thought and awareness of encouraging people to slow down, eat real food — versus processed food — and build community.”

There isn’t one particular location for the picnic. People can decide where to set up their checkered blanket, what to eat and who to invite. And everyone is encouraged to send a video to popuppicnicdenver@gmail.com telling who they are, where they are, what their menu is, and why they love pop-up picnics. The videos will be edited into a short documentary that Dana Miller, from Grow Local Colorado, will show at this year’s Slow Food Convention. It will also be used to promote future events.
