What makes a nerd? Nerdist podcast host Chris Hardwick says it doesn’t matter whether it’s Sailor Moon or Star Trek you’re into; it’s the intensity of the obsession that matters. “What makes someone a nerd is how passionate they are about something and how they will try to understand that thing on a grander level,” explains Hardwick. “Like, more than anyone else in the world.”
Hardwick considers himself a nerd, and credits Westword for introducing him to a few of his favorite comics — Zippy the Pinhead and Matt Groening’s “Life in Hell” — while he was a student at Regis Jesuit High School here. But since then, the now-L.A.-based comic has turned his nerdy obsessions into a virtual empire. His website, www.nerdist.com, is brimming with various blogs, podcasts and other entertainment for the culture-obsessed. Hardwick has also written a book, filmed a Comedy Central standup special, and hosts a Walking Dead-themed talk show on AMC.
But his podcast, Nerdist, is what started it all. It’s known for in-depth interviews with geek-culture guests from Conan O’Brien to Zooey Deschanel, who nerd out about their own pop-culture obsessions. Hardwick will tape a live version of that podcast tonight in Boulder along with co-hosts Jonah Ray and Matt Mira. The show will feature standup from all three hosts, a live podcast taping with Colorado-based astronomer Phil Plait, and a section for quemments (a portmanteau of “questions” and “comments”).
Get down with your geeky self with Nerdist Podcast Live! at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $26.50 and available at www.bouldertheater.com.
