Against the backdrop of the Starz Denver Film Festival and all its attendant hoopla, local company Listen Productions will stage its own mini-fest this weekend, featuring world premieres of two Colorado-made flicks at Buntport Theater. The first, DNC Mediamockracy, is a 65-minute documentary about the making of a local multimedia stage play of the same title that explored the relationship between media and politics, using footage shot during the Democratic National Convention in Denver, when it ran last October at Buntport.
“We had about 100 hours of footage, and I thought we had enough for a ten-minute documentary,” says co-director Mitch Dickman of the film version’s genesis. “The next thing I know, we made a feature-length film.” DNC Mediamockracy screens tonight at 7 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. on Sunday, with the message “If you have a problem, try to do something about it” deeply imprinted in its vision.
The second film, A Test of Wills, is a ninety-minute fiction also directed by Dickman that tells the story of a screenwriter on the slide who finds his story being written out in scenes come to life; the casting of screenwriter William Hahn in the leading role adds a point of unexpected realism to the plot. Filmed in what Dickman calls a “quick, guerrilla, small-crew style,” Test screens at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
