Today there are myriad ways of expressing affection on Valentine’s Day; contemporary options for wooing one’s sweetheart range from valenvines to skywriting. On the frontier, though, homesteaders had far fewer options. At “Love for the Ages” at History Colorado on Tuesday, February 11, you can see some of the historic Valentine-themed items in the state’s archives. See also: The new History Colorado Center is an architectural triumph The collection also includes correspondence between an Akron homesteader and her future husband, who was living in Iowa at the time, as well as missives sent to the future Baby Doe Tabor by various smitten fellows. Highlights include a letter that William Gilpin, the first territorial governor of Colorado, wrote General Pratt requesting his daughter’s hand in marriage.
