Instead of choosing between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney this November, there’s another candidate you might want to consider: the Kinsey Sicks. The “dragapella beautyshop quartet” is running a fictional campaign on the Republican ticket and will be in Denver this weekend with a new show and album, Electile Dysfunction: Kinsey Sicks for President.
Through a cappella parodies of classic songs and choreographed dance numbers, the Kinsey Sicks take on the issues with tunes like “Vote for Me, I Wasn’t Born in Kenya,” education-reform ditty “Eliminate the Schools,” and a musical solution to the economic crisis, “Sell the Poor.”
“The show gives us a chance to really put out our campaign platform, all of our policy planks in four-part harmony and beautiful red, white, and blue outfits,” says the troupe’s Irwin Keller, who performs on stage as Winnie, the ex-lesbian den mother of the group. Beyond the glitz and glamor, though, Keller says he hopes people get some funny political rhetoric out of the show that they’re able to take back to the water cooler at work. “We want people to laugh, we want people to have a great time, we want people to walk out humming, and we also want them to feel empowered,” Keller explains.
