The Sie FilmCenter’s Hey Girl! series generally caters to women by combining a happy-hour shmooze with a slate of chick flicks. But tonight’s installment, happening — perhaps pointedly — in the wake of Denver Comic Con, targets a slightly narrower female special-interest group: women who also like comics. And movies — namely, movies adapted from comics.
Revolving around a screening of Terry Zwigoff’s delightfully weird Ghost World, the event will include a comic-book swap in Henderson’s Lounge, along with the usual drink specials and mini-manis. Adapted from the award-winning cult-favorite graphic novel by Daniel Clowes (who also wrote the screenplay), Ghost World follows offbeat new high-school grads Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (a girlish Scarlett Johansson) through a BFF breakup brought on by the cynical Enid’s new relationships with an artist, Roberta, and — especially — the creepy record geek Seymour, played masterfully by Steve Buscemi. It’s not exactly what you’d call a chick flick, by any stretch.
“We do pick some films for this program that aren’t traditional ladies’ fare,” notes FilmCenter programming ace Keith Garcia. “And I like to think that Enid is a girl that a lot of other girls identify with. She may not be so popular, but she deserves all of her film time.”
Hey Girl! starts pouring at 6 p.m. at the Sie, 2510 East Colfax Avenue, with the film set for 7:30; bring your favorite comics to swap before and after the show. Admission is $7 to $10. Get more information at denverfilm.org.
