The Flashback Wednesdays series at the Regency Tamarac Square is a movie nostalgiaphile’s delight, not least because the fare tends to go easy on the cerebral cortex while providing a maximum of entertainment value. That’s the appeal of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Amy Heckerling’s terrific 1982 feature about Southern California adolescents hanging out at the mall and obsessing about–what else?–their sex lives. It’s a surprisingly candid comedy with an appealing cast that includes such future stars as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold and Forest Whitaker, and a few worthies who fell by the wayside, such as Robert Romanus and Phoebe Cates. Look for a very young Sean Penn as an appealing stoner named Spicoli, among other delights. Fast Times screens at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, at the Regency, 7777 East Hampden Avenue. The series continues through August with Spaceballs (August 10), Moulin Rouge (August 17), Stanley Kubrick’s mind-bending A Clockwork Orange (August 24) and Saturday Night Fever (August 31).
