About three years ago, Jimmie Lee Smith and his wife were having sandwiches and coffee at the cafe in New York’s Angelika Film Center. They wanted to take the sandwiches into the theater, but they weren’t allowed.
Although Smith — a Denver native who spent sixteen years in New York — and his sister had talked for years about opening a cinema that also served food, the experience at the Angelika was the catalyst that really got things going. He and his wife, whom he met while working on The Lion King on Broadway and who also has an insane love for independent film, came up with the concept of a place that shows indie films and documentaries and serves cocktails and health-conscious food.
Smith, his wife and his sister have spent the last two years working on Neighborhood Flix, which celebrates its grand opening today. They’ve also brought in renowned chef James Mazzio to take movie food to another level with entrees like elk bratwurst and lamb-shank stew.
The cinema, which neighbors the Tattered Cover and Twist & Shout at 2510 East Colfax Avenue, has a cafe and three screening rooms, all of which boast leather seats and one that features loveseats and tables. Visit www.neighborhoodflix.com or call 303-777-FLIX to see what’s playing.
