The 5th Annual Meanest Green Chili Cook-off & Sizzlin’ Jazz Benefit Concert is an attempt to prove that you can fight fire with fire. The beneficiaries of this year’s event — sponsored by the Hatch Foundation in conjunction with Services for Artists — will be victims of the Four Mile Canyon fire who fell through the cracks. “A lot of artists and musicians who live up there are month-to-month and did not qualify for insurance claims or certain grants designated to homeowners,” explains co-coordinator Jessica Sellars. “Somebody has to stand up and make things happen. There are still people living up there in tents.”
Help make things happen when the benefit gets under way at 2 p.m. today at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue. For a $25 entrance fee/donation, participants can judge the chili (the cook-off winner gets $180) and enjoy some sizzling music from local jazz groups that include Janine Santana Latin Jazz, the Lynn Baker Quartet, Ken Walker, Marc Sabatella and Wendy Fopeano and Friends.
