“I realized I would really love a space to talk with other fathers about parenting that’s not based on the gender-normative examples that we’re typically given, and also to talk about some of the radical politics that were on my mind with regard to parenting,” says Tomas Moniz, editor of the Rad Dad zine and the new anthology Rad Dad: Dispatches From the Frontiers of Fatherhood, which also compiles essays from the Daddy Dialectic zine. “I wanted to have those kinds of conversations with people, and that’s what started it.”

Today at 1 p.m., Moniz will take the conversation to the Denver Zine Library, 2727 West 27th Avenue, reading from the book and his latest zine, Rad Dad #21 (appropriately enough, this issue’s theme is “community”), and sharing the forum with several local readers to swap stories about improvisation, anarchy and punk-rock parenting.

“We live in a world that sends such mixed messages to men and to children, and it’s tough,” says Moniz. “I feel like I’m always kind of searching for help, and to know there are a lot of others out there doing the same thing is a nice reminder that by sharing the stories, we can be there for each other.”
