Though I (and a bunch of Highland neighborhood fans, in particular) felt sad last December when Joy Barrett closed the doors of her Studio Bead emporium on 32nd Avenue, I was relieved that Barrett was planning on continuing one annual Studio Bead tradition. Beads, Braids & Brows: A FridaStyle ArtShow, billed as an “art fiesta,” is back for a fifth go-around, bringing with it a bevy of twelve Frida Kahlo-inspired assemblage artists and a lot of complementary fun to match the beauty and whimsicality of their works.
Beginning tonight at 6 p.m. at Porkchop Studio, not too far away from the old Studio Bead ´hood at 4519 West Utica Street, BB&B participants can view artist shrines, shop the Mexi-marketplace filled with paintings, jewelry, folk-art and more; get a Frida makeover courtesy of MOP Factory Salon; and, especially, take their chances at the Art Vending Machine, which, for $10, rewards chance-takers with unique hand-crafted treasures in plastic bubbles.
