The cinematic quality of Goldfrapp’s recorded work has always been evident: Singer Alison Goldfrapp and musician/composer Will Gregory create breathy, synthesizer-heavy songs that could easily sweep across a movie screen. Tonight those songs get a chance to do just that in Goldfrapp: Tales of Us, five music videos that coalesce into one unified story.
Coinciding with the release of the duo’s sixth studio album and co-created with Alison Goldfrapp’s real-life partner, filmmaker Lisa Gunning, Tales of Us is more than a collection of music videos; it’s an exercise in storytelling set to song. “I wasn’t really interested in doing a pop video, and neither was Alison,” says Gunning. “I’m obsessed with narratives and stories, and obviously, that’s my first port of call — to make a story make sense, whether it’s in an abstract way or a dreamlike way.”
Bursting from black and white into color, these vignettes give life to the songs “Stranger,” “Laurel,” “Jo,” “Drew” and “Annabel,” as view-ers are moved through tales of self-identification, love, loss and confusion. The night will also include the screening of a fifty-minute live Goldfrapp concert filmed earlier this month that features music from the pair’s deep discography.
