Kimbal Musk and Hugo Matheson — the Boulder restaurateurs who own The Kitchen, The Kitchen [Upstairs] and The Kitchen [Next Door] — have been toying with making the move to Denver for a couple of years, but they’ve been waiting for the right space.

They finally found it: The Kitchen is officially coming to Denver.

The duo has signed on to take over the Gumbo’s space when that restaurant closes at the end of October. “We couldn’t ask for a better historic building,” Musk says of the new address. “We’re really excited about the 16th Street Mall, too. We were really careful about our location, and we’ve seen how it’s changed and how it’s going to change. Once they finish Union Station and the mall is complete, we think it’s going to be pretty phenomenal.”

The restaurateurs plan to erect a restaurant similar to the flagship Kitchen, bringing in the same urban design elements and a new American menu focused on local ingredients served in a bistro-like setting. “We want to become a community restaurant in Denver just like we have in Boulder,” notes Musk. And although there are currently no plans to bring concepts like [Upstairs] and [Next Door] down to Denver, there may be in the future.

Construction will start as soon as the partners take over the space. Musk hopes to open the doors to the new restaurant in spring of 2012.
