After an unexpected stay in the hospital — he fell and cracked his head the weekend that the first big press on his latest restaurant, El Diablo, came out in the Denver Post four weeks ago — Jesse Morreale is back on the phone. And on the job.

And when I talked with Morreale today, he said he’s still looking to get his new restaurant, which occupies the stunning, Broadway-side space of the First Avenue Hotel project, open before the end of July.

“I don’t want to push it,” Morreale says, pointing out that he’s never opened any of his many ventures — La Rumba, the original Mezcal, Tambien, Sketch — before they were ready. “But so far, we’re on track for occupying the space and opening before the end of July.”

While Morreale was at Denver Health, chef/partner Sean Yontz kept all the inspection appointments, and also worked on the menu they plan to serve at El Diablo, perhaps the most appropriately named restaurant ever.
