Wandering Monks is a duo whose lyrics embody the rebellion present in so much of early hip-hop. The two tackle difficult subjects like war and peace over strong production, making their anti-big-money lyrics shine. While the content is serious, it gets a bit redundant over the course of the record’s eighteen tracks, as does the continued name-dropping of figures like Che Guevara and Gandhi on cuts like “Sociology.” The outfit can’t help but express exasperation with society on tracks like “ChickenBeast,” one of the most impressive joints on the album. “Ancient Wisdom” is another bright spot, but this effort is hit or miss.
