Seattle-based composer Matt Jorgensen has a special connection to Denver, even if he’s never lived here. You see, Jorgensen is the son-in-law of the late Dale Chisman, one of the city’s greatest contemporary painters. Jorgensen’s memories of Chisman — in particular, the high standard the painter set for other artists — left a permanent mark on the young musician. Chisman was also the inspiration for Tattooed by Passion, a jazz CD of music inspired by his father-in-law’s example. “It’s not a ‘tribute’ to Dale,” says Jorgensen. “It’s more of a thank-you to the artwork, because being around his paintings inspired me to push my music in new directions.”

Jorgensen, who’s a drummer, will perform Tattooed by Passion tonight at RedLine along with the rest of the Matt Jorgensen Quintet: Thomas Marriott on trumpet, Mark Taylor on saxophone, Dave Devine on guitar and Mark Simon on bass; there will also be a string quartet backing the group up.

“Performing this music live becomes a collaboration with Dale, especially with the images of his paintings being projected onto the stage,” Jorgensen says.

The show begins at 7 p.m. at RedLine, 2350 Arapahoe Street. Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 at the door; go to redlineart.org or call 303-296-4448.
