So many choices for music, dance or art this weekend. But if you’re in the mood for aerial performances, archetypal paintings, ecstatic dancers, light shows, electronica, fire spinning, spoken word, custom wearable art, vibration adjustments and energy activations — all in support of a good cause, mind you — there’s only one place to be on Saturday night.
That would be at Ignite the Light, billed as an “ecstatic celebration” to raise money for at-risk youth programs, including the Center for Juvenile Justice and Ridgeview Academy, an alternative detention center and school in Watkins. The event appears promising not only for its wide range of New Age spectacle (kind of Cirque de Soleil meets Baba Rum Raisin) but for its effort to involve the youth in question in the performances. The art show will feature the work of Ridgeview students alongside paintings by professional artists, and aspiring Ridgeview hip hop artists will be collaborating with Tevia “Wisdom” Jones, DJ Sol Rising, Buddha Bomb and others on the night’s music.
“Our intent is to use music, dance, art and the power of group vision and intention to create a meaningful relationship with one kid at a time,” says Marija Grgurevic, one of the producers of Ignite the Light.
Whatever else happens, there should be plenty to absorb. Two stages of dance music, a silent auction, a “universal grid of light activation,” art films and music videos, and performers like Yes Tribe, who call themselves Jedi Guardians and pledge to, well, “weave modern [+] ancient~future technologies to usher humankind into Galactic awareness.”
