Local poetry mover and shaker Day Acoli named her weekly open-mike series Black Star Dog for two reasons: in memory of her late dog; and as a reference to Sirius, the Dog Star — the brightest star in the galaxy — and its dense, dark cousin, Sirius B.

“I thought the experience should be like shining six times brighter than the sun,” Acoli says of the events, which include featured poets and guests, a set by hip-hop group Paradox and a participatory dialogue on changing themes. Activities begin at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Gypsy House Cafe — and you never know how it’s going to turn out; for instance, a recent conversation about stereotyping in films turned quickly to more direct racial issues. “It was simultaneously great and scary, but at least we’re still talking,” Acoli notes.

Gypsy House is at 1279 Marion Street; for information, call 303-350-0460 or visit www.myspace.com/day_acoli.
Tuesdays, 8:30 p.m., 2007
