Artist/curator Devon Dikeou occupies a rare place in the art world — a vantage point from which she views the culture from both sides. After first creating the art journal zingmagazine, in which several pages of each issue are set aside for artists to use as they please, she went on to create the Denver-based Dikeou Collection.
“I realized a lot of projects would actually be nicer if they came to life, so I started the collection,” she says. “I wanted to create a really comprehensive overview of how the artist works and of how collections work.” And the first piece she bought was by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz: a reinterpretation of Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” rendered in Bosco Chocolate Syrup. The collection’s grown since then, but when Patty Ortiz of the Museo de las Américas invited Dikeou to curate a show of works by a Latin-American artist, Muniz was her first choice.
The resulting show, Muniz: Remastered, an exhibit of 45 out-of-this-world works from Pennsylvania’s West Collection — many fabricated out of a toolbox of unusual media, including thread, sugar, dust and peanut butter and jelly and then rephotographed — opens today at the Museo, with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Dikeou likens the works, which reinterpret influential masterpieces by Cézanne, Stieglitz, Warhol and many others, to the proverbial Chinese box: “They’re like a picture within a picture within a picture.”
